Under Labour, St. Kitts-Nevis has consistently demonstrated its strength as a leading tourism destination. In the areas of airlift, major construction projects and other key indicators of the sector’s performance, the federation continues to perform strongly. This is despite the global economic downturn and difficulties being experienced elsewhere in the region.

    Infrastructure Investment:
Labour has put in place an impressive tourism infrastructure including:

    • The re-designed and complete revetment of Port Zante.
    • Expansion of the R. L.B. International Airport.
    • Provision of an extensive network of roads that serve our fellow-nationals and also help to make St. Kitts-Nevis a more appealing destination.

St. Kitts-Nevis is now considered a competitive sports tourism destination as a result of Labour having constructed:

    • The Silver Jubilee Stadium, the Cayon Stadium, the Conaree Stadium, the St. Pauls Stadium and the Warner Park Stadium.

    Associated Economic Activity:
Amongst those whose earnings are increased as a direct result of the tourism industry are:

    • Taxi drivers
    • Bar owners
    • Arts and crafts vendors
    • Caterers
    • Tour operators
    • Various other entrepreneurs, such as the suppliers, book-keepers, owners, and service providers who are economically connected for example to The Strip in Frigate Bay.

    Industry Scope and Trends:

    • Visitor arrivals will reach 500,000 for the first time in 2009-2010.
    • Year-round cruise arrivals are a reality, resulting in the creation of about 130 new taxi operators for 2009 alone.

    Air Lift

    • In addition to regional destinations, non-stop flights are now available between St. Kitts and New York, Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami and London, with additional flights being added this year.

    Tourism Projects and the GlobalCrisis:
Despite the global economic downturn, work continues on major tourism projects such as:

    • Christophe Harbour, Ocean’s Edge, Silver Reef, Marriott Condominiums and others.

    Enhancing Our Tourism Product:
Labour is committed to continuing this positive trajectory while also:

    • Preserving our natural environment.
    • Expanding community tourism.
    • Facilitating the participation of an even wider range of local entrepreneurs in the economic opportunities generated by the industry.
